I really enjoyed watching this video. He has a great point about education killing creativity. Music and art is "not as important" as the other subjects taught in school. My middle and high school didn't even have a music or art class. I liked when he talked about when children can't keep still then they are immediately labeled with ADHD. His story about the girl who became a dancer was great!
This man has a great point about our education system. All children have different gifts and learn in different ways. A good teacher will find out how a child learns and teach the child in that way. Children should see school as a place where they can go to express themselves and learn about things they like but instead we are forcing them to fit into the created system. Suppressing children and their different gifts is not the answer. We need to educate our children, yes but we also need to support them in their gifts before its too late.
I really liked this video. I went to a Montessori school as a child which focuses mainly on kinesthetic learning. We learned dance and music as often as our math and english, and I thrived in the environment. When I made the switch to public school in the 5th grade, I was shocked at how much they stifled creativity. We need to nurture our children to be the best at what they do, whatever that may be.
I thought this video was very good. I have heard else where that creativity and art needs to be more important in school. I agree, I think its important to teach kids that creativity so they can flourish. Children have wide imaginations, we need to utilize that, not dumb them down! This video really made me think, I hope the current system of education does change!
I really enjoyed this video. I strongly agree that arts are as important as any other subject. I enjoyed the story about the girl that didn't pay attention during any other subject, but she paid strong attention during art class. I found it surprising to know that arts is at the bottom of the educational totem pole all over the world and not just in America. Also, I agree that women are better at multitasking than men. I also really enjoyed the story about how Gillian Lynn became a dancer.
I really liked this video. He made a point that everyone is born with creativity and as we go to school we grow out of creativity. I believe that fine arts is a very important element to schools but unfortunately the education systems don't believe that. Many children are not as bright in core subjects like math, English, history, or science. But when it comes to art, music, and dance they are the most intelligent children that you could see their intelligence is in the fine arts subject, and they should have the right to make this intelligence grow and flourish.
What I found most interesting was his point on how every education system has the same top subjects that they find important – math, humanities, and art being last. It is apparent that art is being taken out of classrooms and I find that is because of money. Schools with higher test scores, get more funding for their building, technology, salary, etc. This is one major concern for education systems already, but what made me think was how there are more subjects to art than the simple drawing, painting, learning about artists; dance is the subject of art he used. He stated that there is no education system that teaches dance everyday as they do math. This ties to the issues of children being overweight and this is a healthy problem for children, especially in the United States. -Joi
I agree with the video completely, and really liked and was saddened with the true facts that he had to say. School has really killed students creativity. I was actually talking to a second grader yesterday and asked her if there was art, dance, or music in her school. The only class she is offered is music once a week where they sing but do not explore instruments at all. I find it sad that there are less extra classes available in schools now. The school I work is a k-12th school where only art is available and only k-8th grade students are offered it once a week for 40 mins. I think that in order to really help students find there passion in life we need to offer these extra classes and if our schools wont give them to us then we need to learn how to incorporate other teaching styles and activities into the everyday classroom.
I thought this video was spot on and excellent! The man has an amazing point of few in which I completely agree with. Children need to be thought that creativity is important throughout life. Without a sense of creativity the world would be dull and boring. The fine arts departments in schools should be taken at the same equality as the math, science and language department is school. Some children are able to express themselves through math, science and language but they still need the creativity to express themselves in an original manner. And for those students that are unable to express themselves through those subjects they should still be given the opportunity to express themselves in their own creative was. I personally am a very creative person and I believe at it is important to teach students and children how to express themselves through different forms of arts. All in all I agree that creativity is being killed in public school because society has decided that children don’t need arts but rather more “core” classes.
I really enjoyed this video too. He had really good ideas on the arts in public education. As I look back on my education, I see that arts were not highly emphasized as well. I too had the idea that I was was not going to be an artist and steered away from art classes. I also found it surprising that public education focuses on subjects that are valuable for work and everywhere on earth the arts are the bottom of the educational system.
I thought this video was very interesting. Schools nowadays are not educating children the way they use to. We are forcing them to learn about what we think is more important or what we are failing at as a whole. At both my Elementary and Middle School everyone took art and music classes. I think bringing out the creativity we have in children helps them expand the way they learn and broaden their imaginations. All children have different ways of learning and some of that is through creativity. When we take that away from them it does no one any good and we blame the children for it. The education system needs to be changed to fit the learner not how we think they should learn.
I found the video rather entertaining with an interesting topic at hand about the way education evolved to what it is today. I think he hit a main point about the continued disappearance of arts so that we can be "prepared" for the "preferred" line of job(s). Another topic that I found interesting and true was the notion of being wrong as bad thing. So many times great ideas and thoughts are never followed through because we are worried that a risk at being wrong is not thought about as a risk of also being right. Which leads to students not being prepared to face any adversity or knowing how to overcome an adversity. The quote "If not prepared to be wrong, you never come-up with something original", was fantastic to me. Liked stated I found the video informative and entertaining allowing us to open our eyes to some wrongs with education but it would have been nice to have him state his opinion on how to fix the issue. Maybe he wants us to come up with ideas on how to fix the problem. Yes, I believe the arts are fantastic but I think we need some of the essential things we learn from "main" subjects in today's education. Maybe not that we change education but we make it better. Stop excluding things or shying away from certain areas but by adding them. Learning new ways to reach all kids. Some say that we can't reach so we stay quo rather than taking a risk at new ways of learning.
This man has some points that I agree with 100% and it was very strange to me that I never truly thought about our education system this way until it was spoken by someone else.In school I did art and music however I know now that it is decreasing rapidly especially in public schooling which I think is horrible because I loved those classes. The opportunity to have extra classes in school mainly in elementary and middle school ages is very important for the child's knowledge of the world as well as a chance to explore what they like as well as make a decision on what they do not like. Every child is born differently and with different creativity. I liked the point about how every schooling has the same 4 subjects as the most important to them not what is benificial to the child.
I think this man is correct in the sense that he wants children to be taught creativity and I think that the way it works is that teachers need tobe taugth to allow this creativity in their classrooms! I mean seriously would it be the worst idea to give children 15 minutes a day to express them selves through drawing, play(yes I think that is an art), or writing? The worst that may happen is they may be a little bit louder than usual but is that really that bad? Listen to the conversations being had when that happens you will find out soo much more about the children you work with everyday. And may I dare say this but you may actually learn about what they like and be given new ideas as to how to teach a subject! These 15 minutes a day may give children the freedom they need for the day to just not worry about anything else. Creativity is an idea I think it is worth keeping in the classroom and in life. I feel strongly about this video. One of the main reasons I decided to become a teacher was because of the complete fail of the education system. Teachers are so concerned about their students passing standardized tests when they should really be concerned about the concepts they are teaching and how they apply to the children's lives in and outside of the classroom. I will strive to incorporate and encourage creativity in all of my lessons because I feel like creativity is one of the most important aspects in a child's development. Being an artist myself I have been very creative from a young age. Through my art I was able to express myself and shape myself into the person I've aspired to be. I think this can work with children as well. If you encourage them to find their creativity and express themselves a window is opened for some self discovery.
I totally agree with what this says. I feel that school does discourage creativity a lot of the time. Teachers teach to what is required, to the test. I feel that if the education system were revised to teach students using their creativity and their uniqueness then it would be more successful. Instead of reducing arts in schools we should be sustaining them and creating more activities. if schools were to teach with creativity in mind, I believe that we would create better citizens, be more successful in aiding our students to achieve their dreams and aspirations. I hope to be the type of teacher that sees students' differences, their imaginations and creativity, and utilizes that knowledge to help students get all they need out of their education.
