Data Visualization

  1. What did you think of the video?  What was striking?  Interesting? Eye-opening?  What type of impact did this video have on you?

  1. How did this video affect you as a learner?  How did this video affect you as a teacher?

  1. We are trying to re-hone our view of science towards story-telling, a concept aimed at “softening” and making the process of science more accessible.  How does story-telling hook into “The Beauty of Data Visualization”?  Can you give some specific examples of how his use of visualization enhances story-telling using data?

  1. This is a bit of a jump – can you see connections between his work and our very simple investigations on burning candles?  Think about how you presented your information and some of the presentations that other people made.

  1. I always thought that the presentations TED are always good. David McCandles makes me understand data in a better way. Looking a data makes me go insane but if you visualize the data the way David did in his presentation, data is easier to understand. It impacted me by rethinking how to make data seem less complicated by using different visual technology. It's amazing how technology can make a big impact on how you comprehend difficult things.

As a learner, it has impacted me by making me understand data more and now I want to learn how to make more complex visual data to make hard information look simple. I know how to make simple graph such as line, bar, pic, etc chart but I want to go to the next level.

In a teacher perspective, this will impact on how I will use data in my own classroom. I think using visual data will help keep students more interested and would learn more with visual. It's a great way to teach.

I think that the "data visualization" has many qualities to story telling. Some examples David used data visualization was talking about the amount of money countries have but then show how much we actually "have". Also, how many people break up on Facebook and how there is a trend. You can see the trend easily in visual data. Using visual data in storytelling keeps people interested more.
Now that I have watched this video, I can see connections between what David does and our candle projects. First you have to gather all data and information. Once you get that, put it in excel, then make it into a live data. Data lays down the evidence, data is what we use for information on things. Like David said, "Data is the new SOIL". Great video!

  2. 1. I was surprised by the difference between data in charts and data in the land mass example.
    2. As a learner, it would be interesting to use graphs like those for notes. For example, use the land mass idea to group events that happened in different periods and connect them like a web similar to the Model of Inquiry. As a teacher, it would be really useful for studying the amount of animals there are in different areas.
    3. In my ECME course, we are taught to use cut outs of important characters and events when telling a story. Data visualization would be useful especially with younger children who do not understand numbers yet.
    4. We measured the different speed unscented and scented candles burn. Data visualization would be very helpful to show the differences in the amount of burning. If I had more time, I would have used various-sized triangles to show the differences.

  3. *What did you think of the video?
I enjoyed the video. I think his speech was well presented. I liked the graphs and charts that were displayed as he talked. The colors helped to understand the graphs when he described it as a landscape.

    *What was striking?
The simplicity of the graphs and charts

    *Interesting?
This helps to understand visually to see the demographics of the money spent, etc.

    *Eye-opening?
Yes I believe so. I think many people are visual learners and especially with a presentation these graphs help to keep the audience's attention while speaking at the same time. Everything was so colorful and so many different kinds of graphs.

*What type of impact did this video have on you?
I was impressed that he had no artistic experience. And the variety of visualization of date graphs. We aren't limited to one idea but many.

*How did this video affect you as a learner?
It helps to comprehend a lot of information in a chart/graph. You can make it complicated and detail or simply.
*How did this video affect you as a teacher?
As an artist this helps to help use Visualization Data as a teaching method in subjects.

Well this proves to be an excellent idea for story telling and showing the data for a simple way for others to understand. As his example with the animals by color coating them and by the size of the squares. He demonstrated many different kinds data graphs that proved to be easily understandable.

I think it provided other ways to view visualization data. I think we could have used more colors and shapes in the candle prezi assignment. But over all it was beautifully done.
