I absolutely adore this video. We watched it in my communication for teachers class. I think that, again, the message behind his talk is 100% applicable to education today. We need to find a way to change the system of education so that it embraces creative ideals. We need to move away from the mass produced factory atmosphere that has predominated education and try to think outside the box.
This was basically the best. He called out so many things in the education system, that some people don't want to admit. The part about having kids work alone, was so true! In school they separate us and tell us that if we work together we are cheating. So we are left alone, no other students to ask or talk to about this assignment, so we either get stuck or come up with the most basic answer. But when we can come together, marvelous things happen because two minds are better than one, three better than two, etc. Times are changing, and kids are not learning the way they used to. We simply can't sit them down and test them all the time, so change needs to come (and bring some innovative ideas along with it).
Sir Ken Robinson is a great speaker... The paper-clip question was interesting to me. I wonder about the part where they retested the same sample, and they seemed so much less able to come up with answers as they got older.
I have seen this video and I absolutely love it. It has so many different things that make you think why? why do we educated students that way? Why don't we change it? It is amazing how the current system was designed for a different age, the culture of enlightenment (Industrial Revolution. Everything has changed since then. We have technology now that children would rather watch TV then learn boring stuff in a class just like they use to do back in the day. It was very interesting about the testing results when they test Kindergartens on divergent thinking and 98% was genius but once they got older and retook it, it went down. this doesn't surprise me at all, I agree that education does change the way you think and its not for the best. This video was very interesting and had me think more about how education can effect children in the future.
once again a very interesting video from him. one of the big questions he leaves me with is what sort of proposition he has for a reform.... he points out some very significant issues, but he doesn't seem to offer much of an operational alternative. its all well and good to point out the problems but what expectation of change can he have without offering some practical changes that would address these problems.
I've enjoyed the videos you have shared with our class about education. As an up and coming teacher this video helps me to see how schools have come along but not many changes. It really feels as thou what the system thinks is good or the best for the children is really holding them back from what the children really can be. You are right about the majority of the student today wouldn't be allowed to study abroad, or further a higher education as well as any education if we were living in the day when only the enlightened people were allowed to be educated. It really sad that we still see a class of students being labeled in the school system. Why separate the gifted children from the not so gifted children, children of the special ed classes? These children can help one another to educate themselves as well as learn better social skills by doing so. Labeling children cause a separation between children and they don't know why. The gifted are often teased are looked as brainy children, nerdy, geeks, and they develop self esteem and or social shyness. On the other hand the other children develop a low self esteem problems feeling as though they aren't smart enough and this is as good as it gets.
I love the animation. I'm a visual learner and seeing the main points written down like that really helps me understand and remember what he said. I liked the fact that he compared schools to a factory. Imagine if all subjects were taught in the same class? It would be very similar to preschool really. I think it would be a really interesting to work out. Does anyone have any suggestions?
This video puts a new light on how I think about education. How can we as a new generation change the way things have become. The part about the testing students starting in kindergarten and every few years after that is alarming. What is the education system doing to us all?
This video is very good at opening your eyes from other's view points, and realizing that not everyone learns at the same rate. Just because a student is ten years old does not mean that they are ready or matture enough to handle what maybe their peers are. This does not mean that they are stupid, just they have their own speed of learning. So all of this state testing I do not agree on. It is to much pressure on the teachers and their student. Yes test them, but to see where they need help, not as a competion to see which country knows more.
This video is amazing, he touches on so many subjects. I never thought about school like a factory until he explained the similarities of it, and it really made me think. And he really made me want to question why are we separated by age? Another thing that really shocked me is how he explained the test scores of a 5 year old were better than when the child was 15! Its unbelieveable that we go to school to get more educated, but in a sense we also become very uneducated. Amazing video
All the issues discussed have plagued my thoughts for years. I noticed that I have displayed those same trends over the course of my life. I know I am not alone and it's nowhere near comforting. Watching friends and family being medicated purely for their education has always bothered me. This vid has given me a lot to think about as continue on my path to becoming an educator.
Well the video wasn't great but it did keep me intrigued. I wish schools would show this to board members as well as teachers to give them a second look or insight to other teaching methods. I hope the class integrates many teaching methods mostly hands on though i very much enjoy it. This video also reminded me of the cartoon guide to physics in a sense, though i've only thumbed through the book.
I liked the part about ADHD. My brother suffered the consequences of being "medicated" for something that is totally natural, a young child not wanting to sit still listening to someone talk for endless hours. Since our educational system was conceived so long ago, I wonder how long it will take for the system to change to meet the needs of the future and not those of the past.
